Simeon Stedman worked in Hartford, Connecticut from 1818-1825, producing these attractive ladles.
It would be interesting to see how the wood was attached to the metal ferrule. I suspect that the wood had a ridge turned in the end that went into the metal and that the metal was cast directly on the wood. If anyone out there has one of these and access to an x-ray machine it would be most interesting to see if my theory is correct.
Stedman marked his ladles on the wood and metal with "STEDMAN". Only the "N" remains and the markings on the wood have a tendency to disappear with use. This ladle came from the collection of Paul and "Stevie" Young and is pictured in John Carl Thomas' book Connecticut Pewter and Pewterers figure 189 on page 174. The ladle measures 14 5/16" long. The ladle is in very good plus condition.
