An Exquisite 18th Century Boston Mug by Thomas Green - SOLD
Exquisite 18th Century Boston Strap Handle Mug with Double Convoluted Terminal by Thomas Green, working 1756-1779 bearing the Stag Trippant Touchmark. For many years this touch had produced controversy. When first observed the strike was incomplete and was thought to be a horse. Later a more complete touch showed that the animal was a stag.
Various students on the subject ascribed this touch to various makers. A recent scholarly article in the Pewter Collectors’ Club bulletin by David M. Kilroy; The Stag Trippant Mark, carefully debunks previous theories and weaves the most logical path to his conclusion that Thomas Green was the originator and likely sole user of this mark.
As for design this mug is certainly one of the most attractive known. It has a presence that sets it apart from other strap handle designs. As with all the other Boston Strap Handle Mug Forms the handle is “burned on” in the same manner that porringer handles were attached. The linen mark is worn smooth at the upper handle junction while the lower attachment clearly shows the linen mark. The scrape finish marks are present on the thumb rest of the handle.
This mug is in very good plus condition with a good mark. The interior of the mug shows that it likely was used as a coin depository or a spoon holder. The mug measures 5 7/8” to the lip.
