A Scarce Unmarked American Dolphin Handled Pewter Porringer - SOLD
Dolphin handled porringer designs originated in England and were also produced here. There are two different sets of molds known in America both from New England, one used by the Danforths (as there are marked examples) and this variety by an unidentified maker. To date no marked examples have been found on porringers made in this mold.
One distinguishing feature that differentiates the two are the “bubbles” coming out of the mouths of the dolphins. The Danforth examples have what appears to be “starfish” whereas this variety where they appear to be just round bubbles.
It is believed that this mold originated either in eastern Connecticut or Rhode Island and would date from the last quarter of the 18th century. The bowl (actually a small basin) of this porringer measures 5 5/8” in diameter. The overall length including the handle (ear) is 8 1/8”
This porringer is in fine condition still retaining lathe marks on the inside and outside of the bowl and on the bottom of the bowl as well.
The linen mark is extremely strong. There are owner’s initials “RA” in the shield on the face of the handle. A fine example of a very scarce porringer.
