A Small Size "Bishops Hat" Pewter Porringer - SOLD
Bishop’s hat eared pewter porringer, small size. The ear (handle) on this porringer has been called a “Bishop’s Hat as the outline is similar to the “Mitre” hat worn by Bishops and Abbots. It is believed that these porringers date from circa 1820-40. The bowl has a boss center and an outward tapered bowl with an outward curved lip at the top. This example has a bowl of 3 5/8” in diameter.
This porringer is in very fine condition. Lathe marks are present on the face and back of the bowl. There is no linen mark present. This is due to the fact that the metal used when the handle was poured was not hot enough to melt all the way through the bowl yet hot enough to ensure a tight bond to it.
