This Coronet Handle Porringer is one of the "initial" handled porringers from Boston. It was believed most of these date from the 1780's to the 1820's. However more recent research finds these dates appear to be on the late side. Many of these initial eared porringer likely date their origin to the mid 18th century. Recent research has assigned William Northey as the likely maker of this porringer. Northey has working dates assigned as 1778-1798 certainly within the time frame previous authors had assigned to these initialed eared porringers.
This example is in particularly fine condition. The lathe marks on the back of the boss are sharp and clear. The linen mark is quite strong. The surface of the bowl has some gentle small nicks likely made by spoons hitting the surface. The handle casting is sharp and the initials well defined.
A fine example of a relatively scarce New England Coronet eared porringer. The bowl measure 4 5/8β which is the mid-size produced by this pewterer. The other sizes are 5 7/16β and 4 ΒΌβ
