A Near Mint Pewter Flower Handle Porringer by Samuel Hamlin, Sr. - SOLD
Samuel Hamlin, Sr. received his training in the shop of Thomas Danforth II and likely also Jacob Whitmore between 1760-1767.
The spread eagle mark is very similar to heraldic eagle seen on 1798 silver dollars.
He had a short business partnership with Thomas Danforth II until 1773. Hamlin had a short stay in Hartford, CT moving to Providence in 1773 and continuing in business until 1801. Based on the eagle design this was made toward the end of his career.
This porringer is nearly mint, with a perfectly struck touchmark. The bowl measures 5 3/8" in diameter. All of the plannish marks show on the back of the handle the lathe turning marks show clearly. The linen mark is so clear you can determine the thread count of the material used. A superb example hard to improve upon.
