A Scarce Unmarked American Pewter Spline Handle Porringer from the Belcher/Danforth Molds - SOLD
This unmarked 18th century pewter crown handle porringer was made in the molds originally owned by Joseph Belcher of Rhode Island and New London CT and later by the Danforths of Middletown, CT.
The handle of this porringer has a distinct "spline" along the center of the back. The bosses and high surfaces of the handle have been planished in the 18th century manner. A practice that was not used in the 19th.
As to who made the porringer it is unknown. It can be said with confidence that it was either Belcher or one of the 18th century Middletown Danforths. Of interest is an owner J. Jones stamped his name on the back of the bowl.
The porringer is in very good plus condition. The bowl measures 5 1/4" in diameter and the linen mark is very strong. A fine example of a very scarce porringer.
