A Scarce Form Early Josiah Danforth Pewter Teapot - SOLD

A most uncommon form teapot by Josiah Danforth son of William Danforth, who began his apprenticeship under his father around 1817. Unfortunately, William died in 1820 and at the age of 17 Josiah took over his father’s business.

This unusual form teapot is undoubtedly from Josiah’s earlier period being marked with his eagle touch. Later period work by him was marked with his rectangular name touch.

To our knowledge, to date there have been fewer than a half dozen of this style teapot know by him. One other example is pictured in Connecticut Pewter and Pewterers by John Carl Thomas on page 115, that example has a different style handle.

This pot measures 7 3/8” tall to the top of the finial. The pot is in very fine condition overall. There are a few pits on the touch itself.
This piece would date 1821-40.
