A Middletown Plate by William Danforth with Joseph's Touches
A 7 7/8” single read rim Middletown pewter plate marked with a double strike of Joseph Danforth, Sr’s lion in gateway touch. Although marked with Joseph’s touches this plate was not made by him. When Joseph died in 1788, Jonathan took over the pewter shop on his own. He apparently had no touchmarks of his own so he undoubtedly continued to use his brother’s touches. Around 1790 his younger brother William had completed his apprenticeship and judging by adds in the local paper had formed a partnership. At this point William was also without a die. Both men apparently used the lion in gateway touch without using the hallmarks. William soon after had his own eagle with name die cut likely around 1791-94. Now how do we distinguish between those Joseph marked pieces made by Jonathan and those by William. For a highly educated guess we look to plates marked by William with his eagle touch. We find that he struck two impressions relatively close together while those ascribed to Jonathan have two touches separated and struck in a chevron pattern. This plate has the touches close together so it appears to be William’s work.
This plate is in very fine condition with lathe marks both on the face and back. The touches are fine as struck.
