A 7 13/16" Smooth Rim Pewter Plate by "Love"

A 7 13/16” Smooth Rim plate by Love. A smooth rim differs from a flat rim in that the surface of a flat rim is indeed flat. A smooth rim on the other hand has a concave curve on the face side as a reeded rim plate has. These were made by turning the face of the rim smooth eliminating the reeded edge by cutting it smooth in the turning process.

This plate is in fine condition showing almost no wear. The touches are mint “as struck” meaning they were not perfectly impressed by the pewterer. The “Love” touches were used by various Philadelphia Pewterers over a period of time from the last third of the 18th century through the 1st quarter of the 19th century.
