A Near Mint 7 7/8" Pewter Plate by Joseph Danforth, Sr.
A nearly perfect example of a Joseph Danforth Sr. 7 7/8” pewter plate. Joseph worked in Middletown, Connecticut from 1779 until his untimely death in 1788, Joseph’s quality of workmanship was equal to his father’s Thomas II. Had Joseph lived longer we likely would have considerably more examples of his wares.
This plate is double struck with Joseph’s lion in gateway touch both over his hallmarks. Lathe turning marks are very pronounce on both the face and the back of the plate. Where the touches are struck they “telescope” through flattening the surface on the face of the plate opposite the strike on the back.
Of interest where the lion in gateway touches are struck, Danforth had placed the face of the plate against an anvil that had some nicks and imperfections in the surface. This left raised bumps where the defects were.
A nearly mint example with very strong touches.
