A Rare and Early IS Semper Eadem Boston Single Reed Rim Pewter Plate - SOLD

A Rare and Early IS Semper Eadem Boston Single Reed Rim Pewter Plate

We rarely have the opportunity to offer a piece of marked American pewter that predates the mid 18th century this is why we are excited to offer this 9 3/8” Pewter Plate of Boston Manufacture by IS Semper Eadem.

Much has been written about the IS Semper Eadem and TS Semper Eadem touches. My Father, Wendell Hilt corresponded with William Blaney a substantial amount about as to who these men could be. Both of them felt that they were from the first half of the 18th century. As my dad commented, “All of the example he had seen, showed considerable wear and he knew of no examples that appeared to be nearly new.” Whereas, examples of the Semper Eadem gateway touch had examples that were nearly new.

Richard Bowen wrote an article trying to assign the IS and TS touches to the Greens who were producing wares in the last quarter of the 18th century. Certainly if this were correct by now minty examples of wares bearing the IS Semper Eadem and TS Semper Eadem touches certainly would have surfaced. Many feel the Semper Eadem Gateway touch is that of Thomas Green who worked from the 1730’s and died in 1790, hence, there are minty examples bearing the gateway touch that likely date from the 1770’s onward.

David Kilroy gave his opinion to who is the mast likely “owner” of the IS Semper Eadem touch. He attributed this to John Smith pewterer?/merchant, b-1685-d. 1737 making this plate one of the earliest marked American pieces we have ever been able to offer to the public.
