A Very Scarce Pewter Plate by William Danforth with the Earliest Version of His Touch - SOLD
Early Production William Danforth single reed rim pewter plate. William likely served his apprenticeship with his older brothers from 1784-1790. He and his Brother, Jonathan formed a partnership to operate the shop after Joseph died in 1788, in 1794 Jonathan left the shop and William took over all production.
It is likely around this time William obtained his “large eagle” die. This plate is struck with the earliest version of the die. The eagle’s left wing is seen under the head and beak of the eagle. Instead of stars there are dots or “pellets” as described by John Thomas in his book on Connecticut Pewter. The die apparently through wear ended up being recut several times changing the eagle and wing along with the “pellets” that became stars.
Examples of William Danforth pewter with this first variant are quite uncommon. This 7 7/8” plate is in very good plus condition with fine touches clearly showing the position of the wing and the “pellets”.
