A Scarce Baltimore Plate by George Lightner - SOLD
Southern Pewter Plate by George Lightner of Baltimore, Maryland who worked from 1806-1815. I have neither cleaned nor straightened the few soft bends on this plate due to the fact that it retains an original label from the Collection of J B Kerfoot who authored a book American Pewter. Published in 1942 this book is certainly a valuable asset to collectors as Kerfoot unlike many of his contemporaries who used hand drawn illustrations of touches, Kerfoot used photographs. This is essential to avoiding fake marks.
This plate is in fine condition with fine “as struck” touches. Lathe marks show on both the front and the back of the plate.
I don’t believe Kerfoot used this example from his collection as an illustration in his book. A fine example of a piece of “Southern Pewter”.
