A Stephen Barnes Single Reed Rim Pewter Plate
Speaking of not having something for a long time and wouldn’t you know it another shows up shortly after the one you just found. This is the case as we acquired anther Single reed rim pewter plate by Stephen Barnes believed to have worked in Middletown, Connecticut from c-1798 to 1810. Little is known about Barnes and his production. This plate is in near fine condition with a blemish free face. The touches are fine as struck. Large touchmarks are rarely found with excellent impressions as the amount of force necessary to impress the touch onto the piece of pewter is quite intense. The diameter of this piece is 8 ¾. Pieces by Stephen Barns are quite scarce.
Barnes likely trained with William Danforth in Middletown. It is important to note that William Danforth produced plates of this same size and his and Barnes’ appear to have come from the same mold.
It is important to note the design of Barnes' touch mimics that of Ashbil Griswold. It is highly likely that the same die cutter produced both of these men’s dies.
Price: $395
