A Scarce Flat-Rim Plate by Nathaniel Austin, Charlestown, MA. Austin changed his device in his touches reflecting his political position. His earliest touch was a rampant lion in gateway. After the British raided Charlestown and burned his shop down, he is believed to have moved to Lunenburg, MA where he apparently ditched the lion in favor of a Austin Scroll touch. He returned to Charlestown after the Revolution and adopted the National Symbol, American Eagle for his touch. This flat-rim plate is post- Revolutionary. Austin worked until 1807,
This 9 5/8” Flat-Rim plate is in very good plus condition with fine touches of both his eagle mark and his hall marks. There are also 3 beautifully engraved “Boston” style initials set in between his marks. This type of engraved initials a found fairly frequently on pieces used in the Boston Area. The use of these initials are believed to date from the last third of the 18th century to the early part of the 19th. There are a number of different engravers who did these.
