A Very Fine Pewter Plate by Robert Palethorp Junior, of Philadelphia
This very fine single reed rim pewter plate was made by Robert Palethorp Jr. who worked in Philadelphia from 1817-1822. This plate was made during the latter part of his years of production. Note the die has a wavy edge. When this die originally started out it was considerably larger. The first version also had a wavy border with R. Palethorp and Philadelphia (abbreviated) surrounding the eagle. Apparently, the steel in this die was inferior as there is a second version where the lettering has been removed down to the oval border around the eagle. This was then filed making a second wavy edge with the eagle in the center.
This plate measures 8 3/8” and is in very fine condition with very fine touchmarks. As nice an example of a Palethorp plate as we have ever had.
Price: $345
