A Superb Condition Plate by Gershom Jones

Superb condition single reed rim pewter plate by Gershom Jones of Providence Rhode Island, 1774-1809. This plate shows very light knife marks in the well of the plate. The lathe marks from turning show clearly both on the face and back of the plate. 8 1/4" diameter.

The two lion-in-gateway touches are mint “as struck” and the hallmarks are deeply and clearly struck. It is believed the Jones received his training in Norwich under the tutelage of John Danforth. When one compares the touches John Danforth had to those of Jones it appears that the dies were the handiwork of the same die cutter.

Fine condition plates by Jones are not often encountered and this example is the finest we have had in many years.
