A Rare Flat Rim Pewter Plate by Thomas Byles - SOLD
Exceptionally fine 9 5/8” flat rim plate by Thomas Byles, working, Newport, RI 1711-12 and Philadelphia 1738-71. This is certainly one of the finest examples of a flat-rim plate by this maker that exists. The surface if free of pitting and only has a few use blemishes.
The touch marks are very fine as struck and deeply impressed. Byles’ work is all pre-Revolutionary and is quite scarce. He is known for single reeded rim plates, flat rim plates and double domed tankards with fish-tail terminal handles. This will be a fine addition to any American Pewter Collection
