A Civil War Pattern July 1864 .58 Caliber Cartridge Box by Nece
During the last years of the Civil War, the Federal Government issued numerous Contracts for all sorts of military supplies, in fact so many contracts were issued that at the end of the war there were huge surplus supplies that the Government ended selling at auctions.
A “New Pattern” of Cartridge Box was issued in July of 1864, instead of having a brass face plate with US embossed on the plate the face of the leather was embossed with a US in oval mimicking the former brass plates. This was a “cost savings”.
A number of Contractors produced quantities of these boxes. This example was made by Reuben Nece of Philadelphia, who had a contract for 3,000 of these boxes.
This cartridge box is in fine condition with minor wear to the closure tab. Incidentally, the leather of the implement pouch is not "crazed" that is the grain of the leather. The box retains the original tins. The maker’s mark and inspector’s mark are clearly struck on the inner flap of the box. There is very minor crazing and other wear. Boxes in this condition are found infrequently.
Price: $495
