A New York Depot M-1858 Smooth Side Civil War Canteen - SOLD
During the Civil War hundreds of thousands of canteens were produced by Northern contractors and armories for the war effort.
Major quantities were produced by Philadelphia contractors, New York contractors and Cincinnati contractors as well. This is fine example is a "New York Depot" canteen. It retains it's original brown wool cover in near perfect condition along with the original cotton strap.
The cork and chain are original as well. The spout is made of pewter.
Canteens in this condition are becoming harder and harder to find. The diameter of the canteen is approximately 8" CD
