A model 1840 Wristbreaker 1st Contract Saber by Schnitzler & Kirschbaum - SOLD
A model 1840 Wristbreaker Saber by Schnitzler & Kirschbaum, Solingen Prussia. This particular saber is an example from the first contract they received from the United States Government to supplement sabers being made by Ames in Cabotsville, MA and later Chicopee. This contract was for 2000 sabers.
These were delivered in 1840 and they saw heavy use in the Mexican War and Early Civil War. As a result examples of these are quite scarce according to Thillmann’s Book on Cavalry and Artillery Sabers.
The saber measures 43 1/4” long overall. The scabbard is in very good condition it does have some pitting. The blade is very good with some dark areas and mild pits. The scabbard is marked with a small S& K on the drag and the saber is marked with a “crown” over RC and small S&K on the back of the blade by the guard. A scarce saber
