Thomas Boardman received some of his training from his uncle, Samuel Danforth. Samuel produced some of the most handsome late 18th century pewter flagons based on the design of "spire flagons" made by many London pewterers. Boardman also produced examples identical to those his uncle made.
Boardman continued to produce "spire type" flagons with the addition of a spout. In England spouts began to be used in the 1780's. That tradition on "spire flagons" didn't take hold here until around 1815.
This fine 2 quart flagon is marked Boardman & Co and dates circa 1822-1827. Although the touch indicates New York manufacture, it is most certain all of Boardman's Production was in Hartford. Boardman had sales offices both in NYC and Philadelphia.
The flagon measures 10 3/16" tall to the top of the thumbpiece. It is in very fine condition with some surface scratches from use. The metal in this piece is the typical high quality found in Boardman products. Reasonably priced.(SPECIAL PRICE NOW $1450.00)
