An Export Pewter Quart Taper-Sided Tankard by Philip Matthews (there are different spellings), London 1736-1749. There are a fair number of Mathews tankards and pint mugs that have been found in America. Also, a very few “skittleball” teapots are known by him. There also have been pear form teapots found with wood handles.
Philip died in September of 1749 and records indicate that his wife Sarah took over the business until 1764. Guild records indicate at least 2 apprentices continued their apprenticeships with her.
This tankard is in fine condition inside and out. The touch is well struck on the inside bottom, lathe marks are clearly seen on the inside of the lid and outside bottom. The hand scraped finish marks are very pronounced on the back of the thumbpiece. The tankard measures 7 1/8” to the top of the thumbpiece. The WR Crown touch is well impressed to the left of the handle. There is a small casting stress crack in the bottom of the tankard.
Price: $1950
