A Quart Export Pewter Tankard by Townsend & Compton
Quart taper-sided Export Pewter tankard by Townsend & Compton , London 1784-1802. Thomas Compton was the son-in-law of John Townsend. He was married to John Townsend’s daughter, Mary in 1775.
The “Townsend Dynasty” were major exporters to America. They were responsible for what is undoubtedly the greatest quantities of pewter sent to America from England. The Dynasty was active from 1748 through the first part of the 19th century.
This tankard is of late 18th century design employing a more slender body than mid 18th century examples. The used of the double “C” handle along with the open chair back thumbpiece speaks to the changing designs of this period.
This tankard is in fine condition. It is marked on the inside bottom and with hallmarks to the left of the upper handle. There are owner’s initials, E W on the upper handle. The inside bottom has some etching. This was most likely caused by not being thoroughly dried after being used and the moisture slowly etched the surface. The tankard measures 7 ¾ “ tall to the top of the thumpiece
