Quart Pewter Export Tankard by The Townsend Group. This tankard bears the hallmarks of Townsend and Compton along with the interior touch of John Townsend. Although this is marked on the inside bottom with John Townsend’s touch the fact that it has the Townsend & Compton hallmarks to the left of the handle indicates it was made during that partnership. The firm was in business from 1784-1802. Like John Townsend this partnership also had a large export business with the United States and North America.
This tankard measures 7 ½” tall to the top of the thumbpiece. The exterior body is in fine condition with a good deal of the lathe turning marks still present. There is some etching by the hallmarks. The interior surface is fine with some scratches. The touch is clear although not a complete strike therefore “as struck”. The outside bottom has some pitting. I would believe this was subjected to an undo amount of moisture that only affected the bottom surface. The moldings on the lid and the foot are quite bold and complicated. A very nice example of an export tankard.
