An Export Pewter Pint Tankard by Townsend & Compton

This pint Export Pewter Tankard was made by Townsend & Compton of London. Townsend and Compton were the partnership between John Townsend and his son-in-law Thomas Compton.
The firm was in operation from 1784-1802. During this time, they made major exports of their products to the United States. The forms they made include plates dishes basins mugs tankards teapots as well as others.

The quality of their metal and workmanship are amongst the very best. It should also be noted that they changed the designs of their products to keep up with the latest fashion. This example has beautifully engraved owner’s initials engraved on the face of the body.

This tankard is in fine condition on the exterior. There is some etching to the interior of the body. The touch is fine and well struck. The tankard measures 5 5/8” to the top of the thumbpiece.
