A Set of Six Near Mint Townsend & Compton Export Pewter Plates

Set of six single reed rim Townsend & Compton Export Pewter Plates in near mint condition. This set appears to be unused. There is a total absence of knife marks on the surfaces of all six plates. They do have some light scuff marks and very minor spotting. This set shows all indications the six plates have always been together.

Townsend and Compton were part of the Townsend Dynasty of Pewterers who captured a substantial portion of the export market beginning with John Townsend in 1748 Through the firm of Thomas and Townsend Compton ending around 1814. The firm that produced this set was in business from 1784-1802.

These plates measure 7 11/16” in diameter. The touches are all well struck. The bouges are beautifully hammered. A set hard to improve upon.
